Teacher philosophy
It is my teaching philosophy that inevitably students will not retain all they learn. However, if we teach them how to learn, they can learn for a lifetime.
Classroom Management
Flip Your Card
Each student has three colored cards in a pocket at the front of the room. The students begin each day on green. Everyday is a fresh start. As Catholics we believe in forgiveness and beginning anew.
The color and meanings are as follows:
Green- The student followed all the classroom and school rules today and they stayed at green.
Yellow- The student had to be told more than twice to follow the rules. We talk about the problem and they are encourage to earn the card back to green and to adjust behavior so it does not escalate to red.
Red- The behavior of the student is repetitive and I will contact the parents at the end of the day to discuss any difficulty the student is having following class rules and instructions. If the student is repeatedly getting to red I will discuss the situation with Mr. Bogel and consequences may arise like missing out on field trips, working in another classroom or another appropriate action.

Homework/Planner
This is the first year your child has had a planner at school. This is a vital tool in teaching students how to handle responsibility and planning ahead. I will need you to sign the book every night. Please to do not sign the book without looking at the assigned homework and making sure it is done. The signature is acknowledging you have seen the completed assignment and the child has requested you sign his/her planner.

Star of the Week
Each Student will be selected to be a "Star of the Week" We will send home a poster for your star to fill out and return during their week. The Star of the Week will begin Monday September 15th.
Ar - Accelerated Reader
We are going to begin a wonderful program called Accelerated Reader. This program will help find level and interest appropriate books for your student. The program comes complete with comprehension tests and book suggestions and reports we can send home to you.
Think central - text books at home
Your student may have come home and told you that they can see their Language Arts and Go Math books at home! They are correct. Students can go to www.thinkcentral.com and use their username and password to login. The first time you go you will need to use the drop down menu to select our country, state, school district (Diocese of Oakland) and school before logging in. The students all have their login in their planners. The naming convention is: first name last initial, all lowercase, no spaces. All passwords are names of saints.
Field Trips
Third grade is planing three field trips this year. The first field trip will hopefully be in October at the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Oakland. We are waiting on approval of dates from the Cathedral at this point. The second field trip will be familiar if you have had a third grader before. The class will be going to Star Struck Youth Performing Arts, to see Seussical the Musical. The third and final trip of the year will be in the spring to Chabot Space an Science Center. In the third trimester students will be learning all about space during science.
Volunteers
I am looking to have volunteers in the classroom for learning centers in Math and Language Arts. I will be asking for a month commitment from parents who are interested (4 total sessions). Centers will be once a week and parents will be working with small groups. Your child may or may not be in your group every time you work in class but hugs and kisses are always allowed upon goodbye.
There will be other volunteer activities for class events and parties. I will follow up with the Room Moms with further information.
